Hoesch E 3 is a eutectic cooling brine liquid based on inorganic salts. Eutectic systems contain a mixture of chemical compounds or elements that has a single chemical composition that solidifies at a lower temperature than any other composition made up of the same ingredients. The eutectic cooling brine is used for cooling at a defined temperature of -3°C. Hoesch E 3 can only be used undiluted, as a small dilution e.g. from rinsing will disturb the eutectic. The formulation incorporates inhibitors to protect materials such as iron and stainless steel against corrosion.
The eutectic brines guarantee a homogeneous solidification in the indicated temperature. Therefore it is necessary to reach the overcooling point (-2.8°C) to solidify Hoesch E 3. The cooling system has to be cleaned before refilling. When filling in closed systems for cooling storage (e.g. eutectic plates) take care that there has to be an expanse free space (in solid state, Hoesch E 3 takes more space than in the liquid state). The eutectic equipment should not contain cracks. Due to the limited convection in cracks, the inhibitor could not possibly cover all walls of the equipment as it is needed to build up the protecting film and corrosion could take place.
